Welcome!
Hello
and welcome to the Friends of the San Jose Rose
Garden!
Founded by Beverly Rose Hopper and Terry Reilly, Friends of the San Jose Rose Garden have "adopted' the garden under the Adopt-A-Park and the City of San Jose's Public/Private Partnership Program.
The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is located on the intersection of Naglee and Dana Ave. in San Jose (Map)
As you may know, due to severe cutbacks to the city's park maintenance budgets over the years, staffing levels at this garden were severely cut. As a result, this garden was placed on probation (see the letters here 2005,2007, 2008) by the All American Rose Selections (AARS), the governing board of public display rose gardens. It is our goal to restore the AARS Acredidation.
UPDATE:
The recent pruning event brought 215 volunteers who pruning over 4000 roses in 2 hours! See photos and a video of the event HERE.
The Pre-Mother's day Deadheading and Weeding event was quite successful, making the garden look better than it has in years for Mother's day. See the video and photos HERE.
Currently, the city is working an aggressive plan for weed abatement and improving the soil. They have lined a number of beds with weed cloth to see the effectiveness with the Bermuda grass. In addition, 50 beds will have a 4" layer of compost spread out to improve soil conditions, add organic material, retain moisture and help with weed control. They have put resources into bringing in the San Jose Conservation Corps, and the WWP to augment the current staffing levels as well.
Our next massive volunteer day will be on July 12th, Deadheading and general clean-up in preparation for the mid-summer judging of the garden by the ARRS, the governing board of accredited public Rose gardens. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the event!
